Erie YouTube of the Week: Floating Houses on Horseshoe Pond
This week’s Erie YouTube of the Week shows floating houses anchored in Horseshoe Pond in Presque Isle State Park.
The July 2008 issue of Lake Erie Lifestyle magazine (sent to WQLN members) included an informative feature on the 24 houseboats in Horseshoe Pond. The article—which does not appear to be available online—notes that owners pay an annual fee to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to keep their houseboats in the pond. The houses must remain chained to cement anchors and be painted white, according to the article.

Great find! I always wondered if these things have electricity or plumbing? Are they beached in the winter?

Anyone else think that sounds like Mr. Rogers? Almost a George HW Bush, Mr. Rogers hybrid of sorts...
Regardless, cool topic :-)

I'm not sure about the plumbing, but there are power meters clustered together on the shore. I'd assume the mains run to the houseboats.

Hi, we used to have one. Yes, there is electric-there are lines from the ground that run in hoses under the water to the boats. As for plumbing, we had running water, same concept as the electric, but we had no sewer. So, a porta-potty was what we had in our bathroom. We had a small kitchen and a large living area that doubled as where we slept. As for in the winter, they stay put, my dad would just put our rowboat that we used to get from shore to the houseboat up for the winter. I can always remember him going out to check on it in the winter or after a heavy storm, you just never know what Mother Nature may do. Staying out there was absolutely heaven, I miss it all the time!
