VisitErie releases hotel tax numbers for May
VisitErie released hotel tax data today for May 2008.
According to their report, $48,593 was collected, an increase of 16.4% over April and an 13% growth year to date. Of the 5% collected tax, VisitErie receives 1 percent and the Erie County Convention Center Authority receives the remaining 4 percent.
The numbers for June should be higher as its the start of the tourism season and several conferences and gatherings were held here in June.

Here are the figures for the last 5 years (fiscal year runs July to June):
2003/04 - $376,671
2004/05 - $399,582
2005/06 - $425,496
2006/07 - $452,444
2007/08 - $458,258
It's apparent that the hotel tax has not deterred tourism in the area with the numbers continually trending upward. Although the 2007-08 figures show a slow down, that has got to be related to the price of gasoline and subsequent drop in travel.
