Now THIS has been a long day! In case you didn’t know, my Penn State-bound son Jordan was selected to play in this year’s “Big 33″ Game, an nationally-televised football game between the best 33 players in Pennsylvania vs. the best 33 players in Ohio.
Today, Jordan had his first practice with the team, which was held at – of all places – Penn State…we had to be there by 9:00 AM, so of course we’ve all been running since 4:30 AM.
I have to say that today – for the first time – Â I realized the magnitude of this game and what it means not only to Jordan’s football career, but to his development as a young man as well.
He’ll spend an entire week in Hershey, PA with a host-family that will transport him back and forth to practices, as well as doing his laundry and keeping an eye on him for the week. He’ll meet with the media, have photo sessions, and even autograph sessions. On the Friday night before the game, he and his team mates will take the stage at banquet in front of 1,500 families, sponsors, and fans…and on Saturday night, play in front of a nationally-televised audience as well as the 15,000 fans at Hershey Park Stadium.
But that’s nothing…compared to the chance to change a child’s life: check this out -
As an astute observer of the world economy, I’ve never been shy about expressing my feelings about what the demise of our manufacturing base is going to cost us in the long run. I hate to sound “old” because I’m not…it’s just so hard for me to see an entire generation have to work at a discount electronics joint or as a waiter, because the schedules are erratic to say the least, the pay sucks, and there are really no employee benefits. While it may seem incredibly mundane, there’s a lot to be said for reporting to work every day at the same time. You punch in, you work, you punch out, and then you get paid at the end of the week. Every week! There’s a certain order and structure – which I think most kids need – to having a consistent work day AND a consistent paycheck. Plus, these kids learn a trade that they can fall back on for the rest of their lives, if they need to. I’m living proof of that! While I have really just about given up on manufacturing as a an industry that is being pretty much bled to death by our own government’s regulations and trade policies, I have to say that the place that I call “home” every day for about 9 hours – Industrial Sales & Manufacturing – is a model of what great people working together can accomplish. We’re busy, we’re hiring, and I really think that they treat their employees really well. I’ve been around the block a few times…and I’m impressed. It’s absolutely crazy some days, but all I know is that the work just keeps flowing in. There’s a LOT to be said about that in this economy. So, parents…working in a “shop” isn’t so bad. There’s a rhythm, a structure, and a steady paycheck with benefits at the end of the week. I have to say that it’s something most kids could use…and, it gets them off their cell phones for 8 hours a day!
As much as I love music – you’d be surprised at my collection – I have to say that nothing really beats a great “live” band.
Every weekend in Erie offers a smorgasbord of live entertainment that includes rock, top 40, country and jazz music. The trick for me is match the music with the venue. At this stage in my life – over 30 (ahem) – I just can’t take going into a bar where my kids might actually show up!
In the end, I’ve learned that the type of music that’s being played at any bar pretty much dictates who shows up…and Stiletto attracts a really great crowd who appreciates a great mix of vocals, some vintage rock (Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin for starters) and appreciates some really great live entertainment. Note to all of you bar owners out there: my generation doesn’t drink $1.00 drafts and can hold their liquor without destroying your bathrooms.
I have to say that we’ve become kind of “Stiletto” groupies this past year…these girls can really sing, and they always bring in a huge crowd.
So, last night we (friends, family, and out-of-town guests) packed ourselves into the Sandbar to watch Monica Lewis, Emily Foht, Angie Myers and former Stiletto member Lindsay Vendetti “rock it” for a few hours. They did NOT disappoint…great mix of songs, great vocals, and their back-up band is top-notch.
The Guy From Erie – sorry to refer to myself in the third person – gives an enthusiastic “thumbs-up” to Stiletto. If you live in Erie – or you’re just visiting – “Stiletto” is as good as it gets for live music here. I’ve really loved them every time I’ve seen them perform, and not going to see this great Erie “girl band” would be, well…uncivilized.
I just wish they could book one of the old Erie clubs – the Maennerchor Club or the East Erie Turners – and share the love with even more fans on a bigger stage. Let’s do it, ladies!

Plasha Yoga Studio
Michael Plasha, RYT
Hmmm…the Guy From Erie – and Yoga?
You might just be surprised to know that in between bowling and beer, I have taken several Yoga classes with Erie’s only “real” Yoga guy, Michael Plasha. If you’re going to learn something new, you might as well start with the best, right?
For over thirteen years, Michael has done a terrific job of introducing Yoga to a tough blue-collar market…and has created one of Erie’s unique small businesses that continues to thrive year in and year out.
One of the reasons that people actually read my stuff is because I like to get to the point with my own “Erie Guy” viewpoint on things, so here you go:
I can tell you that up until about seven years ago, I had no idea of what “Yoga” really was. Between my own blue-collar belief system and my religious views at the time, I thought that Yoga was mainly for the whack-jobs in Hollywood. You know, the  Shirley MacLaine types who strike a pose and chant something. Entertaining, but…
For me, the biggest benefit to taking a Yoga class with Mike was to realize that I could just relax. Yes, I was extremely self-conscious at my first class because I felt like everyone was staring at me…but Mike is such an excellent teacher that I was able to “get out of my head” for an hour and do something positive and healing for myself. Not too shabby!
I can tell you – if you’re reading this and are so incredibly stressed out with your finances, your job, your kids, or your spouse that you’re wondering if there’s any way to hit the “reset” button in your life…give Yoga a try.
I have to admit that I consider myself an expert at what I do every day, and that I really don’t do well with “pretenders” very well. If I have one fault – ahem – it might just be that I expect everyone that I spend my time, money, and energy with to be experts, too. Â That’s where Plasha Yoga excels.
During the last few years, many fitness centers have decided to add Yoga to their schedules. In fact, I’ve seen several new “Yoga” studios pop up lately. Yoga is like tool & die making: you just can’t replace 35 years of practical experience with someone who just got a degree in Phys Ed 2 months ago.
The Guy From Erie alwaysbrings you the best. I like to deal with experts with experience, and I assume my readers do, too.
One more thing: the setting is spectacular…after being located downtown for many years in a really cool loft studio, Mike had the opportunity to move into an amazing studio at the corner of  Zuck Road and Grandview Boulevard a few years ago. I have to say that the first time you see the studio and the grounds, it’s shocking to see something like this actually exists one-minute from the Mall.
What you need to know:
Micheal is a master Yoga Instructor, having taught over 8,000 classes and has had over 900 hours of certified training…every summer he travels to Virginia Beach to teach other Yoga instructors from around the world.
Michael works with all levels of students from beginners to advanced and has given over 1,000 private lessons including adapting yoga for MS, Parkinson’s, Heart Disease, Fibromyalgia, Cancer, and several other chronic diseases.
All I know is that after a session at Plasha Yoga Studio, my head seems a little more clear, my back doesn’t feel so stiff, and I’m just a little bit blissed out. Â Unlike joining a scary fitness center, Plasha Yoga Studio doesn’t make you sign a contract and the entire experience is low-key, enjoyable, relaxing, and…affordable!

Gem City Accounting & Tax Solutions
CarolAnn Taoukhi, EA
With so many folks out there either running their own “brick and mortar” businesses or trying to get started in the business world working from home, I can tell you from over 20 year’s experience that your best friend should be – or eventually will be – Â the person that does your “books” and files your taxes for you.
Unlike “TurboTax Tim” – Our illustrious Secretary of the Treasury – you and I can’t get away with blaming software for filing incorrect tax returns. Using software to automatically generate a tax return is kind of like using those old “paint by number” kits: it might look okay, but it’s never really right, is it?
A few questions…
Do you have a box of receipts that you just don’t know what to do with?
Are you concerned that you’re really not taking every deduction that you should be taking?
Do you think you’re paying too much in income taxes?
Have you not filed your returns for a few years?
Are you behind in your taxes? Is the IRS looking for you?
Enter CarolAnn Taoukhi.
Licensed to practice before the IRS, CarolAnn can not only get your bookkeeping in order, she’ll take the load off of your shoulders and negotiate with the IRS on your behalf.
Since this whole economic meltdown started almost two years ago, CarolAnn has seen the “Tax Resolution” part of her business increase by 100%. A lot of folks out there are in big trouble – and need a pro to bail them out.
Originally from Boston, CarolAnn has lived in Erie for five years by way of Italy and Philadelphia. Tired of the big city crime rate, she sent her husband on a scouting trip to Pittsburgh to see if they might consider moving there. Her husband called to say that Pittsburgh was great, but still a little too big.
“I told him to check out Erie,” she says. “I had always heard so many great things about it.” Abdel called her from Erie and told her to start packing – he loved it.
While she’s still building her practice in Erie, it’s a real testament to her work that she still services the clients she’s had for many years from along the entire east coast. “They followed me to Italy and to Philadelphia – so why not Erie?”, she asks.
A final word of advice from a tried and true businessman – me – about the accounting world: I’ve dealt with a lot of CPA’s and they can be obnoxious and over-priced. And, I’m being nice.
While CarolAnn is extremely soft-spoken, she is an absolute pit-bull when it comes to combing over  tax returns to find every single means available to save her clients money. We have used her services personally to reduce our tax burden by thousands of dollars, and have sent friends and colleagues to her with complete confidence that she’ll take good care of them.
You deserve to be treated like a real person when it comes to your bookkeeping and accounting, and I can tell you that CarolAnn will treat you with respect and get your bookkeeping mess straightened out…she’s a genuinely nice person. Imagine that!
The Guy From Erie gives an enthusiastic “Thumbs Up” to CarolAnn Taoukhi and Gem City Accounting & Tax Solutions!

CarolAnn Taoukhi / Gem City Accounting & Tax Solutions
When I was an apprentice at the late great Anson Tools & Gages a thousand years ago – I seem to use the phrase “late great” way too much as we’ve lost so many manufacturers – I learned how to run huge milling machines called Hydro-Tels, which don’t even exist anymore…
In a nutshell, Hydrotels were giant milling machines weighing in at over 30,000 pounds…you had to pour 4 feet of cement under them just to support the weight.
As a primer for all of you non-manufacturing types out there, heres the rule: weight = accuracy. A heavy machine isn’t affected by as many factors as a light machine is…today, we get around that by taking several “light” cuts instead of one massive one. Of course, adding Computerized Numerical Controls (CNC) to machine tools changed an entire industry forever.
In those days, you apprenticed under an expert and learned the ropes for a few years before they would even let you “touch” something important. As the months – and years – went by, I eventually became an expert Hydro-Tel operator, first using my experience at Anson’s to land a job at Tetra Tool Company in Erie, and later to become one of Little Tikes Toys main vendors for toy molds that needed to be made from 3-D patterns.
After opening my own shop in 1991, it took me about 3 years before I could justify – and afford – to buy my first used Hydro-Tel. I lucked out as the machine I eventually found and purchased was a real gem.
Over the years, quite a few guys in Erie – still in the Tool & Die business – learned the basics of milling from running my beautiful green Hydro-Tel…I run into some of them from time to time, and it warms my heart to hear them tell me how much they learned from me at Kerner Tool & Die. We were damn good at what we did!
Eventually, these machines were replaced by much faster CNC machines. But I can tell you from thousands of hours of experience, there will never be another machine that was more heavy-duty, accurate, and functional than the Cincinnati Hydro-Tel.
After many years of service and millions of dollars worth of business being built on it, I suspect that my “Green Monster” has probably been melted down into a million boat anchors by now!

The Marketplace Gazette
If you’ve ever owned your own business, you already know how challenging it can be to figure out the whole “advertising” component when it comes to marketing your products and / or services.
Today, business owners have so many choices of where to spend their advertising dollars: the local newspaper, TV, radio, and even on the internet. In fact, most savvy media outlets combine their efforts these days to offer you ad space on their websites along with the radio / TV / or print ads you’ve purchased.
Most small business owners and entrepreneurs are on a budget, and I know that I remember the “sticker shock” that I experienced when I decided to advertise for the first time. The problem is of course that I had no idea of what I should have been paying and added in the anxiety that comes with wondering if anyone would even see or respond to my “expensive” ad. Add in artwork, layout and insertion charges and it gets overwhelming.
Fortunately, there’s a great – and affordable – option for the “little guy” who’s just getting started or even more established businesses who are looking for new ways to “get the word out” about their products and services.
Local entrepreneur Kristy Jaros started the Marketplace Gazette – from scratch – just about a year and a half ago. With the help of some talented layout designers and local graphic artists, she’s managed to get her newspaper off the ground with hard work, determination and a lot of networking.
Working from her centrally located office in downtown Erie’s historic Union Station, Kristy’s days are mostly doing what she does best: selling advertising. With over 15 years of experience in various sales positions – including radio and real estate – Kristy usually meets with all of her advertising clients at their place of business so they don’t have to miss any time at work.
As for pricing, it doesn’t get much better than this: How about a business-card ad for just $25? If you don’t know how to design your ad, no problem – the artwork is included!
The Marketplace Gazette is published bi-weekly and each issue – all 5,000 copies – is distributed to over 75 businesses throughout the Erie region including most local hotels and restaurants as well as many other small buisnesses.
The Guy From Erie thinks that Kristy Jaros is on to something here…and wishes she had been around back in the day when he needed some affordable advertising for his own small business. For this, she gets an enthusiastic thumbs up for what she’s created in Erie.
Spending your advertising dollars anywhere else would be – yep – uncivilized!
Kristy Jaros may be reached by telephone at (814) 882-6074 or by email at kristycreative@msn.com.

PIP Printing West
If you’re a “do it yourselfer” like me, you’ve probably spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to print your own stuff at home in order to avoid having to go to a print shop and maybe even save a few bucks at the same time.
I learned the hard way, as usual. After spending way to much money on printers, expensive ink cartridges, and the joy of having to run through the “clean print head” alarms way too often I decided the time had come to make friends with a local full-service print shop.
My biggest problem at the time was that I was using Microsoft Publisher to produce all of my work and every printer I called kind of “jeered” at me and told me that they didn’t work with “Publisher” files and that I should be using a different program like InDesign which costs like a thousand bucks. Sorry, no can do.
When I pulled into PIP’s parking lot, I could see a sign right on the front door that said they were “Microsoft Publisher Friendly.”
Thank-You, Jesus.
Over the next four years, owner Chris Spoto produced every single business card, flyer, mailer, brochure, pamphlet and greeting card that kept our business – The Erie Small Business Alliance – up and running and in touch with our clients.
To me, it makes such a huge difference when the owner of a business actually knows what he or she is doing. Nothing like eating at a restaurant where the owner is a chef, right?
Chris’s knowledge in the graphics world comes not only from his degree in Graphic Design from Edinboro University, but from also working in print shops when he was a teenager. After graduating from college, he worked six years for the previous owners of the same PIP location that he now owns and operates.
The biggest benefit to working with Chris is that when your stuff doesn’t come out right, he doesn’t tell you it’s your fault. Instead, he explains what the problem is and how you can fix it. I can tell you from my previous experiences with some local printers that this is not usually the norm.
Chris’s shop still has the charm of a small business, but the forget the old stereotypical “printer” walking around with an apron on and his hands stained dark with ink. Printing today is almost 100% digital and he uses only the latest equipment designed for maximum speed and efficiency.
Why send your printing needs out of town to some giant internet printer who will never support the Erie economy when you can get everything you need right here?
You can make your life a lot easier by simply emailing your files to Chris before you go to bed, and in most cases you’ll be able to pick your stuff up on the way home from work the next day. When I look back at the hundreds of printing orders that I sent to PIP, they were never late…not even once. Not-too-shabby.
The Guy From Erie is proud to give an enthusiastic “Thumbs Up” to Chris Spoto and his team at PIP Printing West here in Erie, PA.
Having your printing done anywhere else would be uncivilized!

Arnone’s Bakery & Italian Deli
One of the most beloved things about living in Erie, PA – and one of the things that people miss the most when they move away – are the old “mom & pop” places to shop and eat at. Anyone who has traveled knows that these kind of places are getting harder and harder to find because they’re all getting clobbered by the big guys and slowly leaving the American business landscape.
Lucky for us, one of those kind of places still exists right here in Erie at 18th & Cherry Streets in the heart of “Little Italy.”
Because The Guy From Erie has always used pepperoni balls as a way to stuff his true feelings, he decided to finally chase the Holy Grail of all things warm and tasty and his journey lead him straight to Arnone’s.
The first thing you’ll love about the place is that you feel like you’ve been transported to a simpler time…no glitz, neat as a pin, and a very friendly staff. During my short time there  I met the general manager, Nick Arnone and within 15 minutes both his aunt and brother stopped by. I felt like an “extra” on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” in a very nice way.
The shelves are lined with pastries, fresh Italian bread, huge fresh olives and of course pepperoni bread and pepperoni balls. Let’s get down to business!
Arnone’s was found in 1956 by Liborio and Rose Arnone, Nick’s grandparents. Originally located just a block down the street, they’ve basically been in the same location for over 50 years which in my opinion makes them an Erie Institution. Over the years, they’ve opened a major bakery, supplied local pizza shops and Italian restaurants, and have operated a few versions of the deli that’s now their home.
The bakery still supplies the deli with fresh Italian bread, pepperoni bread, pepperoni balls and pizza shells every day. I was invited to watch them in action, but they get started at 4:00 AM and I’m too old for that now.
The Holy Grail
The pepperoni bread that we all love was the creation of Rose Arnone in 1956…and the pepperoni balls were created by Liborio Arnone in the early 1970′s. While Nick downplays the creative process – “My grandmother just stuffed some pepperoni in some dough and baked it” – he admits that Arnone’s were the originators of both.
Arnone’s pepperoni bread has been shipped everywhere, including a shipment to our troops in Iraq when they needed a real “taste of Erie.”
The pepperoni balls are shipped frozen on an overnight delivery to anywhere in the world, including – I love this – Saudi Arabia.
Nick Arnone – who currently runs the family operations – graduated from Gannon and is armed with an MBA to ensure that Erie – and the rest of the world – will be enjoying pepperoni balls from Erie, PA for at least another generation.
A few quick facts: Arnone’s is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Saturday. You can stop by in the morning for pastries, stop by for lunch for some pizza, a sandwich or a sub, or pick up a 14″ pizza on the way home for $5.50…either already baked or just the ingredients for you to cook later.
The Guy From Erie left Arnone’s very impressed with what he saw…and will be back again very soon to stuff his feelings with some good old Erie, PA Italian food!

Port Erie Sports
When you live in Erie, PA the temptation to buy a boat gets pretty strong during the summer months. Boating on Presque Isle bay and on Lake Erie is simply awesome…of course, the temptation to buy a “sailboat” is one the first signs of senility setting in.
If you’ve ever owned your own boat, you remember the two happiest days of your life: the day you bought it and the day you sold it!
For a while, I used to go down to the boat rental place in the lagoons and rent one of their little powerboats, which are kind of small and top out at like three miles per hour.
Luckily – if you still get the craving to have some fun out on the water during the summer – you don’t have to buy your own boat anymore when the urge hits you, because Port Erie Sports has some very nice, fast, and safe boats and jet ski’s “ready to go” with just a few hours notice.
In fact, the Guy From Erie rents one from owner Rob Oreleski every Father’s Day for a few hours just to prove to my kids I love them and would never drown them on purpose. We always have a great time, and the rates are very affordable.
One of the coolest things is the actual building that Port Erie Sports calls home all summer…a 100 year-old “boat house” that used to house the Erie Water Works official work boat. There used to be old boat houses like this all along the bayfront, and this is one of the few remaining ones. Rob even showed me some pencil marks on a door frame that indicated the water levels in the 1940′s…very cool.
I hope you appreciate that the Guy From Erie only chooses local small business owners who are nice to deal with when he crowns them with his world famous “Business of The Week” honor. Rob and Kim are hard-working entrepreneurs and deserve all of the success that comes their way.
Here’s the photo of the very old “pencil marks” on the door frame for all of you “history buffs” like me…you can see the dates are from 1944 and 1945.
Port Erie Sports is located at 402 West Bayfront Parkway in Erie, PA in the Chestnut Street Boathouse.
