Remember lawn darts? I wasn’t allowed to run with scissors, but I could throw stubby little spears around the yard all day long.

U.S. Congresswoman Kathleen Dahlkemper has co-sponsored The Locomotive Fleet Investment and Tax Credit Act of 2009. The tax credit is intended to encourage all aspects of the locomotive industry, through increased manufacturing, sales, and purchasing. By increasing demand, the act should also preserve jobs in the industry. The act would create a 30% tax credit. [...]

Be careful tonight as Thanksgiving Eve is a popular “bar night.” Those coming in from out of town are reuniting with old friends, or simply getting a last few drinks in before spending a long day with family. Some bars claim today rivals St. Patty’s and New Year’s Eve attendance. Weather conditions for the next [...]

Three days until Thanksgiving. We can practically taste the stuffing. Please be sure to follow the odd/even regulations regarding parking in the City of Erie. People not following those rules have made it difficult for city crews to get all the side streets plowed. The owners of Molly Brannigans are due in court in South [...]

The Erie Times-News announced yesterday they will offer buyouts to 25 employees, or about 9% of their work force in a cost-cutting move. Employees were notified of the cuts during a meeting yesterday afternoon. We certainly don’t mean to poke any fun at the pain of losing a job,but when we read the story at GoErie, [...]

The US House of Representatives did not pass the bailout bill yesterday afternoon. The already shaky markets responded by closing down 777 points. Ouch, babe. Rep. Phil English voted against the bill yesterday. He released a statement saying, in part: While I support the need for congressional action to stabilize the credit markets, the legislation [...]

Here’s a brief recap: Erie Indemnity Company, parent company of Erie Insurance, released their quarterly earnings report yesterday. Kevin Flowers of the Times-News had an interesting story yesterday about the recent turnover of TV news reporters and anchors in Erie. Some are staying local and moving to different jobs, such in the cases of Pat Van Zandt and Karla Mullenax Wluydga, while others are using Erie as a springboard to jobs in bigger, [...]

Erie City Council unanimously passed Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott’s proposed 2008 $57.1 million budget. A second reading is still required. All members of Erie City Council as well as Mayor Joe Sinnott are tax-and-spend liberal Democrats. Council ignored $335,500 in budget cuts recommended by their own accountant, Sean T Sullivan, CPA. Here are the recommended [...]

The proposed 2008 city budget is not available on the city web site. Guess they don’t want the peasants getting their hands on the information. Or maybe the 4 people working in the information technology office (2007 office budget of $268,572; $246,977 in wages and benefits for 4 people, average per person of $61,744) [...]

The City of Erie had a budget deficit of $1.3 million in 2006. That’s according to the draft of the audit done by the regional CPA firm of McGill, Power, Bell and Associates. Erie County Executive Mark DiVecchio’s 2008 preliminary budget calls for a .25 mill tax increase. The enormous amount of property taxes is a big reason why Erie can’t attract new businesses. DiVecchio must want people and existing businesses to move away. According to The Tax Foundation in their 2006 report on Property Taxes on Owner [...]

I received more info on the City of Erie health care insurance. The city budgeted $16,500 per employee and councilperson for 2007. In response to the questions you posed related to my e-mail, I have some additional information for you. First of all, the City of Erie is “self insured.” They pay the actual costs [...]

I received the following from a reader that brings up a great point – I’m just wondering why there has not been any ink given to the City of Erie’s 2007 Budget. Of particular interest to me was the overstating of the “estimated” health insurance costs. The budget allocates approximately $16,500 for each city employee, [...]

Carpet bombing of the city wouldn’t have caused as much damage as Erie City Council manged to do yesterday. Council passed a $59.88 million budget for the City of Erie for 2007. Council did zero work to cut any costs. The budget proposed by the mayor was just rubber stamped by council. This could be [...]

Want to laugh a little, cry a little? I’ve posted the 2007 City of Erie budget online. You have to see the budget for 2007 Erie City Council operations. If you’ll remember the mayor and council were trying to get the city unions to give concessions and contribute to their health benefits. Maybe that [...]
