U.S. Congresswoman Kathleen Dahlkemper has co-sponsored The Locomotive Fleet Investment and Tax Credit Act of 2009. The tax credit is intended to encourage all aspects of the locomotive industry, through increased manufacturing, sales, and purchasing. Scott Bremner at WSEE TV broke the news this morning that GE will permanently lay off over 1480 hourly workers. Most affected are those who are already on temporary lay off, about 1200 employees, and 230 who are still working. Also eliminated are 50 salaried positions.

The jury selection continues in the Michael Joyce trial. Judge Maurice Cohill reversed his decision allowing lawyers to question potential jurors in his chambers after a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review attorney objected, saying the selection should be public. As reported here yesterday on ErieBlogs, General Electric Transportation landed a huge 99 million dollar contract with Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram which provides public transportation for the City of Rotterdam, Netherlands. Mike Crotty was killed in the line of duty while fighting a fire at Port Erie Plastics. Crotty was serving with the Lawrence Park Township Volunteer Fire Department where he was Deputy Chief. There are reports of an explosion at the United Refining Company in Warren, PA. The company operates an oil refinery in Warren that can process 70,000 barrels of oil into gasoline, diesel fuel and other petroleum distillates per day. Any problems at the refinery could mean a spike in gas prices in Northwestern PA.

Starting today Single Stream Recycling begins in the City of Erie. Everything can be places together in blue or clear plastic bags every week. Aerosol cans, styrofoam, pizza boxes and waxed cardboard such as milk cartons and laundry detergent boxes aren’t accepted but all other glass, plastic, paper and cardboard items can be included.

Big oops at GE. WJET-TV reported that the weekly paychecks at GE were misplaced and employees there won’t be getting their Thursday pay until tonight and Monday.
