Today is Presidents Day. Presidents Day was originally designated in honor of George Washington’s birthday and is still legally called “Washington’s Birthday.” Banks, the post office, the courts, state and county offices and, depending on how your valentine’s weekend went, liquor stores will all be closed today.

Judge William Cunningham has upheld his sentencing of Teri Rhodes. Rhodes pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of her newborn baby. Judge Cunningham sentenced Rhodes last fall to 9 to 18 years in prison. There will be a hearing on February 4 to determine if Rhodes can be released on bail pending her appeal. [...]

US Airways is dropping the Erie to Pittsburgh route on January 6 but service to Philadelphia will continue. With decisions like this it’s no wonder US Despair is losing money. The airline also dropped Pittsburgh service to Toronto, Louisville, Nashville, Chicago, Denver, Charleston, and Norfolk.

This week Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott cost the taxpayers of Erie hundreds of thousands of dollars to appease the firefighters union with the re-opening of the Marsh Street Garage. Erie Firefighters worked on his campaign and contributed money to his campaign fund.
